Add More Zoom in a Snap with Snapzoom

After today, I have come to the conclusion that I need to stay away from Kickstarter. An amazing combo of created in Hawaii, “Holy crap this gadget is cool”, and “Whoa, the prototype rocks and is useful!” have made me back the Snapzoom.

So, how does does it work? You take the Snapzoom adapter, a smart-phone, and a pair of binoculars, combine them all, and, voila, you have a super-zoom camera. I was skeptical until I saw my friend Doc post a few pictures online. At first I didn’t believe him, so I ran over to his apartment and watched the Snapzoom in action. It worked as advertised and brought the Aloha Tower close enough to touch (we took the photo from the Waterfront Towers).

As you can see, I am very pleased with the results of the Snapzoom and I put my money where my mouth is: I backed the product on Kickstarter. As I am writing this, the project is less than $1,000 from being funded with 27 days to go! Please help them crush their goal by going to Snapzoom Kickstarter Page and backing them.

Spring Cleaning Your “Open With” Menu

Doc recently composed an article on TUAW that detailed a procedure on how to get rid of the duplicate entries if you right click on a file and select “Open With”. I myself had this annoyance pop up and cleaned it up following the instructions in Doc’s post. If you feel uncomfortable with using the terminal, Doc also shares a few applications that can assist with cleaning up the “Open With” list.

Mailbox App Quick Look

Over time, certain apps take their space on the first page of my iOS home screen due to their usefulness. The Mailbox app from Orchestra, Inc is one of those. Even the wait was enjoyable as I checked my screen daily to see my spot in the line. Instead of allowing the users to jump in and overwhelm the server, the developers used a reservation system that controlled the influx of people. I jumped into line a little after the app became popular, so I was about 500K–600K people deep. It was very gratifying to finally be able to use the app, though, and now I am using gmail for more and more of my email correspondence. Ingress Augmented Reality App

Augmented Reality (AR) games have existed for a while now but have not taken off as expected. Now Google is looking to jumpstart the genre through the game Ingress. Currently, the game is in a closed beta status and is only available via invite. You are able to go to the website to request an invite, but I am not sure how long it is going to take to receive one. Currently, according to Reddit, there are only two known users on Oahu and I hope that changes soon! Check out the official video below to see what the game is like:

I personally am going to go down the “Enlightened” path once I receive my invite. As soon as I am able to mess around with this game a bit more I will write a more detailed review!

Google iOS App – Voice Command Test

The Google iOS app has continuously evolved on the platform and it has received an amazing update recently, adding voice based commands to the application. Even though I do use Siri for my requests that the Google voice commands cannot process, for simple questions, I now turn to this app. Check out my video to see a few of the Google voice commands in action and let me know what you think. Faster Than Light Quick Review

There are certain games that hook me like nothing else. World of Warcraft, The Witcher series, Starcraft 1 + 2…all those have that magical effect on me. I can now state that Faster Than Light (FTL for short) is another game that will be added to that list. In FTL, you take command of a crew of a ship on a fantastic journey filled with danger, betrayal, and hoping that you do not run out of fuel. The graphics fit the game perfectly and the gameplay consists of the player micromanaging the crew, having them man different modules present on the ship, repair the ship as it is damaged, and even teleport over to the enemy vessel in attempt to take it over. As the player moves through the different sectors, culminating with a massive boss fight at in teh last sector, there are random encounters that spice up the game. In one instance, you can go from moving forward with no issues to a spaceship that is aflame with a nasty mantis ship boring through your hull with missiles.
